Scottish jewellery hoards inspire new Ellis Mhairi Cameron jewels

Ruddy red and orange diamonds are set into textured, organic yellow gold in the treasure-inspired Remains collection of day and bridal jewels

Scottish jewellery designer Ellis Mhairi Cameron has returned to her roots to create a new collection of gold and diamond jewels, titled Remains, which celebrates the hidden treasures of the Highlands.

Remains builds on previous Ellis Mhairi Cameron lines, with the same rugged aesthetic that she used to capture the rough majesty of the wild coastlines and crags of Scotland. This time, Cameron has dug deeper, finding inspiration beneath the rugged landscape

“For this collection, I looked at ancient coins, fragments of the sides of buildings and other objects found recently within Scottish jewellery hoards,” says Cameron. “I then translated these details and shapes into sketches, models and finally jewellery pieces.”

The textured 14ct yellow gold jewels, hand hewn by Cameron in her studio within the Goldsmiths’ Centre in London, have been set with natural-coloured diamonds in autumnal shades.

“For this collection, I have worked exclusively with coloured diamonds, particularly reds and oranges,” says Cameron. “I was taking inspiration from the way in which the sun sets on the seascape, erupting into hues of warm reddish colours against the yellow of the sand. I love working with unusual colours of diamond. Personally, I find them much more interesting than traditional whites, and I think the colour tones are much more in-keeping with the organic nature of my work.”

As well as everyday jewels, there is also a bridal offer within Remains with alternative wedding and engagement rings; textured gold solitaires holding ruddy, squared diamonds in rubover settings, with diamond-set bands to match.

“Most of the bespoke commissions I undertake are alternative engagement or wedding rings,” says Cameron, who is now expanding her bridal jewellery offer as a result. “Since launching the bridal pieces, I’ve had a great response.”
