Luxury London jeweller Savvy+Sand is bringing a fresh level of intricacy to engagement rings with quirky cuts, complex designs and a blast of American cool

April 1, 2019 By Rachael Taylor

Swirling filigree, dazzling diamond halos, scalloped bands… a quick glance at the engagement rings on offer at London jeweller Savvy+Sand gives you an immediate insight into what makes this luxury bridal jeweller stand out. It’s all in the details.

“In our boutiques we have close to 1,000 individual rings, and we only have six or seven plain solitaires,” says director Sandeep Babber, the ‘Sand’ of Savvy+Sand – his brother and co-founder Saveet Babber is the ‘Savvy’. “We tend to shy away from simple solitaires. Instead, we focus on the intricate details, unusual diamond cuts, like moval diamonds, and fancy colours. We look closely at the design of the ring and emphasise the diamond.”

For Babber, simple solitaire engagement rings are a commodity that can be haggled over online. For brides- and grooms-to-be shopping at one of Savvy+Sand’s London boutiques, the wrangling comes when deciding whether to opt for a bezel-set radiant-cut yellow diamond or an oval-cut white diamond on a razor-thin band (the latter a style that is very popular at the moment, according to Babber). “What attracts them to us is unique creative design,” he says.

During a trip to the States, Savvy+Sand discovered an exciting cohort of American bridal jewellery designers that was relatively untapped by British stores, and this has become somewhat of a speciality of the jeweller’s. The Babber brothers started bringing unusual engagement ring designs from brands such as Verragio, Erika Winters, Danhov and Chris Ploof back to the UK. In many cases, these brands are exclusive to Savvy+Sand in Britain.

From Ploof’s Mokume Gane, (a Japanese metal bonding technique that creates ripple-like patterns that can look like the grain of wood) to Danhov’s seemingly gravity-defying swirl diamond settings, each designer brand brings its own point of difference, complementing the main Savvy+Sand engagement ring collections.

“We manufacture in house, and have our own workshop in Hatton Garden, but we know the limitations of that, so we go out to find designers and artisans that bring something unique to our offer,” says Babber, who believes that Savvy+Sand is the only British jewellery retailer to specialise in American jewellery brands.

Savvy+Sand has two boutiques in London, where customers can make appointments to view its engagement rings. Its Hatton Garden shop, on the corner of Greville Street, was the original Savvy+Sand store, welcoming visitors to London’s famous jewellery quarter since it opened in 2012.

In October last year, Savvy+Sand expanded with the opening of an appointment-only New Bond Street boutique. The plush space, three floors above London’s most famous luxury shopping street, can be found, fortuitously, just opposite wedding dress shop Pronovias.

With its gleaming dark wooden floors, marble tables, agate-inspired chairs and velvet cushions, the atmosphere in the Savvy+Sand Mayfair boutique allows for a relaxed buying experience. Instead of displaying jewels in traditional showcases, its engagement rings – and other diamond jewellery designs, such as tennis bracelets, drop earrings and men’s wedding bands – are casually dotted along stylish book shelves.

As well as selling its own intricate engagement rings, and those of its selected American designers, Savvy+Sand also offers a bespoke service, and the new space lends itself well to the in-depth discussions such commissions require. “Our New Bond Street private boutique is more consultative,” says Babber. “We feel that private one-to-one sessions are better suited to really talking about the ring. We want to offer a high level of customer service, with no sales pressure.”

In such luxurious and welcoming surrounds, we can’t imagine a better way to plan out that symbol of forever love. Whether it’s a bespoke engagement ring or one of the many refreshingly intricate designs deftly curated by Savvy+Sand, one thing that is certain is whatever you choose, it will be so much more than a simple solitaire.
