Jewels, sustainability and dancing at Copenhagen Fashion Week

In January, 2020, The Jewellery Cut took five British jewellery brands to take part in Copenhagen Fashion Week event The Jewellery Room

Last month, The Jewellery Cut took five British jewellery brands – Ruifier, Metier by Tomfoolery, Mocielli, MyriamSOS and Julien Riad Sahyoun – to take part in Copenhagen Fashion Week event The Jewellery Room.

Set within the Bruun Rasmussen auction house – Denmark’s equivalent to Sotheby’s or Christies – the room was a perfect backdrop to the jewels on display. Provocative art works filled the wall, and a cluster of opulent antique chandeliers dazzled overhead.

As well as The Jewellery Cut’s edit of jewellers, there were other contemporary designers to be found at The Jewellery Room. These included Vieri, Sif Jakobs, Pilgrim, With Love Darling, The Earring Shop, Eshvi and Anpé Atelier Copenhagen.

The one-day event on January 31st, 2020, kicked off with a brunch for press visiting Copenhagen Fashion Week. Other highlights throughout the day included special jewellery-focused dance performances by Danish company Pivot and a talk led by auctioneer Bruun Rasmussen, which also had a display of vintage and antique jewels at the show from its upcoming auction.

The closing event of the show was a panel discussion on sustainability – a key topic at Copenhagen Fashion Week, which just days before had announced a new set of 17 ethical parameters that all its participating brands must meet within three years.

On the panel was Copenhagen Fashion Week chief executive Cecilie Thorsmark, The Jewellery Cut co-founder Rachael Taylor and Guya Merkle of sustainable jewellery brand Vieri. The discussion, which was live streamed through Facebook, was chaired by Dana Schou of Global Fashion Agenda, a leadership forum that advises the fashion industry on how to become more sustainable.

“We had a wonderful trip to Denmark, where we not only got to show Copenhagen Fashion Week what great jewellery talent we have here in the UK, but also to meet local designers and influencers and discover new brands,” says Taylor. “The Week’s focus on sustainability was inspiring. As I said during the panel talk, fine jewellery does not have the landfill issues that mainstream fashion does, but as an industry we still have a long way to go to improve. Being part of Copenhagen Fashion Week’s first sustainability talk centred on jewellery was a great honour, and hopefully we managed to spark some timely discussions.”
