Jasmine Ataullah announced as winner of The Jewellery Cut Bursary

The self-taught Brighton-based jeweller dazzles the judging panel with her striking celebration of South Asian-inspired jewellery and raw talent

October 7, 2021 By Annie North

The Jewellery Cut is thrilled to announce Jasmine Ataullah as the winner of this year’s bursary. The designer will receive a stand at the next week’s jewellery show, The Jewellery Cut Live in association with Fuli Gemstones, as well as a host of other prizes worth more than £7,000.

Jasmine Ataullah is a jeweller based in Brighton, who creates handcrafted contemporary gold jewellery that takes inspiration from South Asian jewellery in a nod to her British-Pakistani heritage. Using skills including lost-wax carving and push engraving, she creates pieces that honour adornment, inspired by ancient architecture, treasures, jewels and the art of Mehndi.

“I’m so grateful to have been selected as 2021’s winner of The Jewellery Cut Bursary, as it is an incredible opportunity to showcase the collection in person,” says Jasmine Ataullah. “The intricate nature of South Asian adornment, alongside the traditional techniques of goldsmithing, have been hugely influential to my journey and the way I work, with heritage being at the pillar of all the pieces I create. This exploration of self through the medium of jewellery is an honour in itself, but it is incredibly affirming to know that people resonate with it. I’m very much looking forward to discussing my work in detail at the event.”

In addition to a place at The Jewellery Cut Live in association Fuli Gemstones on October 15th & 16th, 2021, other prizes have been generously donated by Fuli Gemstones, De Beers Group, The Goldsmiths’ Company, The National Association of Jewellers, Retail Jeweller magazine and Honest PR (see full list below). Jasmine is the fourth recipient of The Jewellery Cut Bursary, following in the footsteps of Aishleen Lester of Le Ster, Kelly Seymour of Cult of Youth, and Ama Dhami

The bursary, which received a record number of applications, was judged for the first time by a panel of industry experts. These included: The Jewellery Cut founders Rachael Taylor and Andrew Martyniuk, Fuli Gemstones chief marketing officer Pia Tonna, BBC Antiques Roadshow jewellery expert Joanna Hardy, Vogue contributing jewellery editor Carol Woolton, Liberty jewellery buyer Ruby Beales, and master goldsmith Trevor Davis.

During the judging process, Jasmine had to present her work to the judges at an event in London. Also shortlisted for The Jewellery Cut Bursary 2021 were jewellery designers Holly O’Hanlon, Katherine Brunacci of KAB Jewellery and Katharina Kraus, having been hand selected by The Jewellery Cut from more than 40 entries.

“We are so delighted to be able to once again offer up a bursary place at The Jewellery Cut Live in association with Fuli Gemstones, and we couldn’t be happier that Jasmine Ataullah is our winner this year,” says The Jewellery Cut founder Rachael Taylor. “What drew the judges to Jasmine was her raw talent. Despite being mostly self-taught, she has built up a wide range of hand skills, including her signature push engraving techniques, to a really high standard. We also loved her strong aesthetic and how she has blended her heritage and traditional South Asian jewellery motifs with a fresh, modern style that has won her a dedicated following.

“I would also like to take this moment to congratulate to the other three designers shortlisted for The Jewellery Cut Bursary – Holly, Katherine and Katharina. Each has a special talent and a unique aesthetic that drew lots of positive comments from our judges, and I look forward to watching them flourish in years to come.”
