It’s pearl earrings and diamond headbands for 2019 brides

The Lyst 2019 Wedding Report suggests the pearl revival and Rachel Weisz’s Oscars moment have boosted searches for these wedding day jewels

March 27, 2019 By Rachael Taylor

Pearl earrings and diamond headbands are two of the most sought-after jewels for brides-to-be, according to global fashion search platform Lyst.

Lyst has just released its 2019 Wedding Report, which tracks trends by analysing the shopping behaviour of 5 million shoppers a month, as well as social media data.

Instagram, it claims, has transformed wedding shopping, as brides use the platform to plan everything from wedding dresses to floral arrangements, seeking out those special visual moments that will filter through their own guests’ social media profiles on their big day. Lyst says that, on average, wedding hashtags get 10 times more engagement than holiday hashtags – giving an insight into the battle of smug spam.

The report claims that there have been lots of changes in the way we shop for weddings, such as guests spending 26% more on outfits than they did two years ago and engagements stretching to a lengthier 13.6 months, allowing more time for planning. Jewellery purchasing, however, seems to be veering towards the traditional when it comes to styling, with this year’s brides seeking out pearl earrings and tiaras.

Searches on Lyst for pearl earrings have risen 109% since the beginning of January, nodding to a trend that surely transcends the wedding day. As well as the classic pearl drop earring or pearl stud earring, there is an explosion of unconventional creative options out there with baroque pearls proving particularly popular at the moment.

The other bridal jewellery trend that the Lyst 2019 Wedding Report picked up on was a desire for statement headpieces – diamond headbands, in particular. Lyst has suggested that the fever for such lavish accessories was driven by Rachel Weisz’s decision to wear a vintage headpiece, made from two upcycled Cartier diamond brooches, to the Oscars this year. Searches for diamond headbands increased 78% in the week following the Oscars.
