Flora Bhattachary lights up with Lakshmi Glow

An innovative use of e-coated ceramic over recycled silver brings a vibrant disco vibe to these gem-tipped cocktail rings by the British jeweller

Flora Bhattachary has brought a neon zing to her latest jewellery collection, Lakshmi Glow, by applying lashings of colourful ceramic to recycled silver.

The collection of cocktail rings, each studded with coloured gemstones that match their e-coated ceramic hues, takes inspiration from the freewheeling era of disco. Colour combinations include Spiced Saffron set with yellow sapphires, Vivid Violet matched with amethysts, Parrot Green with tsavorites.

“The beginning of every collection always starts with a statement ring, it’s what I’m personally drawn to and what I wear,” says Bhattachary. “I also love colour. If you cut me in half, these are the colours you’d find; subdued jewel tones. Ceramic plating makes it possible for me to pair precious metal with that vibrant colour. It’s the most fun collection I’ve designed to date, and perhaps a little line in the sand for the brand.”

Look beyond the boldness of the bright colours and you’ll also see some of the references to Indian design and culture that permeates the rest of the Flora Bhattachary jewellery brand; the designer’s nod to a nomadic childhood split between Britain and South Asia. The floral shape of the colourful Lakshmi Glow cocktail rings pays homage to Lakshmi herself, the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune and prosperity who was often garlanded with lotus flowers.

“I’m often hypnotised by repetitive line and shape, which feature heavily in traditional Indian craftsmanship, as well in the Deco design era, which I love,” says Bhattachary, who has a workshop within London’s Goldsmiths’ Centre. “For me there’s something poignant about the negative shape in the ring; the centre of a Lotus flower is highly symbolic of the pursuit of enlightenment.”
